Jesus of Nazareth is a perennial subject of interest, and one of the most influential people that ever lived. The religious movement which flowed from him produced the Christian Church in all its various manifestations. Christian believers have in common a regard for Jesus as Lord and God, in some way a bodily appearance revealing the Father of the universe. Christian thinkers down the centuries have continually tried to define and explain who Jesus was and is. This book draws together some of the best modern thinking about the biblical evidence, the beliefs of the first few centuries when “orthodoxy” was being defined, the past two centuries when churchmen have responded to the challenge of modern rationalism, and some of the reactions to Jesus in the world-wide spread of modern Christianity and in Islam. It concludes with an attempt at a simple formula which might provoke and sustain faith in Jesus Christ in the most recent intellectual environment.

Gospel scholarship has long recognized that Matthean Christology is a rich, multifaceted tapestry weaving multifold Old Testment figures together in the person of Jesus. It is somewhat strange, therefore, that scholarship has found little role for the figure of Isaac in the Gospel of Matthew. Employing Umberto Eco's theory of the Model Reader as a theoretical basis to ground the phenomenon of Matthean intertextuality, this work contends that when read rightly as a coherent narrative in its first-century setting, with proper attention to both biblical texts and extrabiblical traditions about Isaac, the Gospel of Matthew evinces a significant Isaac typology in service of presenting Jesus as new temple and decisive sacrifice.

John Meier's previous volumes in the acclaimed series A Marginal Jew are founded upon the notion that while solid historical information about Jesus is quite limited, people of different faiths can nevertheless arrive at a consensus on fundamental historical facts of his life. In this eagerly anticipated fourth volume in the series, Meier approaches a fresh topic-the teachings of the historical Jesus concerning Mosaic Law and morality-with the same rigor, thoroughness, accuracy, and insightfulness on display in his earlier works. After correcting misconceptions about Mosaic Law in Jesus' time, this volume addresses the teachings of Jesus on major legal topics like divorce, oaths, the Sabbath, purity rules, and the various love commandments in the Gospels. What emerges from Meier's research is a profile of a complicated first-century Palestinian Jew who, far from seeking to abolish the Law, was deeply engaged in debates about its observance. Only by embracing this portrait of the historical Jesus grappling with questions of the Torah do we avoid the common mistake of constructing Christian moral theology under the guise of studying "Jesus and the Law," the author concludes.

« "Religion au visage tourné vers le monde", le christianisme ne saurait se désintéresser purement et simplement de l'ombre que l'histoire des souffrances humaines projette sur notre espérance : il est dramatiquement contraint de reprendre de façon nouvelle la question essentielle de la théodicée, celle de Dieu. Cela nous conduit à confronter notre mémoire biblique aux divers univers culturels et religieux actuels, et à relancer ainsi à neuf les problèmes brûlants de l'histoire de la passion de l'homme. Dans une religion qui voit dans la passion de Dieu une compassion, une expression non sentimentale d'un amour qui s'enracine dans l'unité inséparable de l'amour de Dieu et de l'amour de l'homme, l'Histoire de l'humanité (au sens de grand récit) vue comme une histoire de passion ne peut que récuser l'idée (moderne) d'une avancée non dialectique du progrès, mais aussi l'intention (postmoderne) de dissoudre l'Histoire dans une pluralité d'histoires sans lien entre elles. C'est pourquoi le christianisme critique l'image répandue dans le public, celle d'une histoire qu'on a fondamentalement soustraite à la dialectique du souvenir et de l'oubli, et qui vient ainsi conforter l'amnésie culturelle régnante en effaçant de la mémoire le souvenir de la passion. [...] En reprenant ainsi en théologie le thème de la théodicée, il ne s'agit pas, comme le mot et son histoire pourraient le laisser entendre, d'un retour à la tentative vieillotte de "justification de Dieu" envers et contre tout, alors que nous devons faire face au monde, à la souffrance et au mal. Il s'agit plutôt, et même exclusivement, de se demander comme on peut parler de Dieu de manière générale, étant donné l'insondable souffrance du monde, de "son" monde. À mes yeux, c'est là la question de la théologie, et il est tout aussi impossible de l'éliminer que d'y répondre. C'est la question eschatologique, celle pour laquelle la théologie ne dispose d'aucune réponse venant tout concilier, mais au sujet de laquelle elle doit toujours chercher un nouveau langage pour ne jamais la laisser tomber dans l'oubli. »
